What is Dual Enrollment?
Dual enrollment refers to opportunities for high school or adult school students – or other eligible students – to enroll in community college courses as a special admit student and receive college credit via enrollment for which the student’s high school or adult school may also award credit.
Los Rios Community College District comprises four community colleges in the greater Sacramento area: American River College, Cosumnes River College, Folsom Lake College, and Sacramento City College. Each college offers Dual Enrollment opportunities for high school students. Opportunities include individual courses on a college campus, center, or online; courses on high school campuses as part of a College & Career Access Pathway (CCAP) agreement; and Early or Middle College High Schools where students may graduate high school and receive an associate degree simultaneously.

Dual Enrollment FAQ
Tuition is free for Dual Enrollment students! However, there may be additional fees you are responsible for paying, including the Universal Transit Pass (UTP) fee and student representation fee.
You may need to buy textbooks depending on the course(s) you take. Textbook information for each course can be found in the Class Section Details on our search class schedules page or via the online bookstore.
Whether or not your class meets in person on a college campus depends on the section in which you enroll. Location and time information can be found in the Class Section Details of each section on our search class schedules page.
Statistics show that students who take college courses in high school do better in both college and high school, and they also complete a college degree or certificate more often. In some cases, especially at high schools with College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP), you may earn dual credit for a college course, or in other words, both college credits and high school credits for the same course.
Whether or not you will receive both high school and college credit depends on your high school's policies, so you’ll want to connect with your high school counselor to find out the answer. No, Dual Enrollment students do not need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
You need to apply to the college that offers the course(s) you'd like to take. In most cases, this will be the college closest to your high school. Use our high school to college tool help you determine the college closest to you. We recommend that you talk with your high school counselor to begin your Dual Enrollment journey.
If you are at least 14 years old or have started ninth grade, then you are eligible. You will need a parent or guardian’s signature as well as a recommendation from your high school’s principal.

CCAP stands for College and Career Access Pathway and is another name for the Dual Enrollment program. It refers to planned pathway agreements between your high school and a community college, which may have some college classes hosted at your high school. It is not necessary for your school to have a CCAP agreement for you to take a college course.
