SILA 305    American Sign Language 1    4 Units

Prerequisite: None.

Description: This is the beginning course in a series of four courses in visual-gestural processing of sign language. It provides instructional activities for people who wish to become competent in communication with deaf people. This emphasis is on non-verbal communication.

Description: This is the second in a series of four courses in American Sign Language. The emphasis is on non-verbal communication. Topics presented include grammatical features such as descriptors, differentiation between cardinal/ordinal numbers, contrastive structure, temporal aspect markers and temporal sequencing.

SILA 315    American Sign Language 3    4 Units

Prerequisite: SILA 306 with a grade of "C" or better

Description: This course is the third in a series of four courses in American Sign Language. It emphasizes expressive and receptive non-verbal communication skills between signers who have preliminary American Sign Language syntactical and lexical skills. It provides an understanding of deaf cultural processes by identifying behaviors and several norms from activities assigned in the class. It also includes dialogues that involve asking, empathizing, negotiation and agreeing or disagreeing.
