ENGED 320 Service Learning: Tutoring Elementary Students in Reading 3 Units
Prerequisite: None.

Description: This class offers students an opportunity to learn and practice basic methods of tutoring elementary children in reading. Students will meet on campus for the first part of the semester to begin training in tutoring reading and then will be assigned to a nearby elementary school or to a before or after school program where they will have in-depth practice tutoring elementary children who are reading below grade level. Students will continue to attend the lecture portion of the class throughout the semester in order to receive additional training and participate in workshops. This course, which may be offered in conjunction with a non-profit organization, such as the Boys and Girls Club, is one of the two required field experience courses for the CSUS Blended Teacher Preparation Program. Prior to beginning work in the schools, students may be required to be fingerprinted and must pass a TB test.

This is a component of the Teacher Preparation program. At the start of the third week of instruction, students will begin their TBA hours, tutoring reading to elementary school students at any of the following schools and times:
In Folsom: Oak Chan, Theodore Judah, Empire Oaks, and Gold Ridge elementary schools. Students may tutor at one of these schools on T/TH from 1:00PM-2:37PM or on a MW or T/TH schedule from 8:25AM-10:05AM. A Friday morning schedule is an option for 2 students. At Theodore Judah, a 1:40-2:37 option is available for one student.
In El Dorado County: Indian Creek, Jackson Elementary, Herbert Green Middle School, and, as well as the Placerville Boys and Girls Club. Time options at some of these schools include twice a week at 7:45AM-9:00AM or 9:20AM-11:00AM. Sierra needs tutors TWTH from 7:30AM-8:30AM. Herbert Green has some 2:15PM-3:00PM slots for 3 days a week and a few 3 hours/week sessions on some Fridays from 2:30PM-5:30PM.
The Boys and Girls club has time options of 3:30PM-5:10PM twice a week, except Fridays, and, of course, except the day that the class meets at 5:00PM!
Students must plan their schedules to have some of the above times open. Students must complete 45 hours of tutoring to complete the course.
