ENGWR 40    Writing Skills    3 Units

Prerequisite: None.
Corequisite: ENGWR 49 or a grade of "P" in ENGWR 49 in a previous semester.
Advisory: Concurrent enrollment in ENGRD 11.

Description: This basic writing course offers individualized and group instruction for students who need concentrated work on developing their writing skills. Each student writes a minimum of 1,500 words divided into at least six writing assignments (including a minimum of two in-class writings). Reading is used to stimulate writing. Principles of basic grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are included, as well as effective sentence structure and basic formal paragraph development. Students must have passed ENGWR 49 with a grade of "P" or be enrolled concurrently in ENGWR 49.

Description: This course offers practice in basic grammar, punctuation, usage, spelling, and sentence writing skills. ENGWR 49 is a co-requisite of ENGWR 40. However, the course is also open to other students seeking help to improve their grammar, punctuation, usage, spelling, and sentence writing skills. Students complete a required number of quizzes designed to reflect their mastery of specific writing skills. This course is taken for a Pass/No Pass grade.

Description: This developmental writing course offers individualized and group instruction for students who need to improve their ability to write increasingly complex and varied formal paragraphs and to advance to the writing of short essays. Each student writes a minimum 2,500 words divided into at least twelve writing assignments (formal and informal, to include paragraphs, short essays, and at least three (3) in-class, timed writings). Principles of basic grammar, effective sentence structure, formal paragraph, and short essay development are included. Reading is used to stimulate writing. Students must have passed ENGWR 59 or be enrolled concurrently in ENGWR 59.

ENGWR 100    College Writing    3 Units

Prerequisite: ENGWR 50 with a grade of "C" or better; and ENGWR 59 with a "P" or placement through the SCC assessment process.
Advisory: Concurrent enrollment in ENGRD 310, ENGRD 110, and/or ENGLB 55; concurrent enrollment in ENGWR 59; concurrent enrollment in LIBR 318.
Hours: 54 hours LEC
Description: This writing course uses individual and group instruction to help students improve critical thinking and writing skills. Each student writes a minimum of 6,000 words including at least two in-class midterms and a departmental final exam. Writing assignments are often based on analysis of readings. The course prepares students for college composition.

Description: ENGWR 301 is an introduction to critical thinking and writing about work in the four major genres of literature: poetry, drama, short story, and novel. In the course, students: 1) further their study and practice in analytical reading and writing; 2) cover principles of logic such as inductive and deductive reasoning, recognizing logical fallacies, and suspending judgment; 3) learn to apply the conventions of literary criticism and to analyze, interpret, and explicate literary works. Students are required to write a minimum of 6,000 words presenting reasoned arguments of literary texts.

Description: This course develops composition skills at the advanced level as well as analytical skills through writing, reading, and discussion. It examines methods by which people are persuaded to think, believe, and/or act. Finally, it focuses on critically assessing, developing, supporting, and effectively expressing opinions on issues. Description: ENGWR 482 is a course in critical reasoning, reading, and writing requiring a high level of competence in English composition. Complex texts (essay and book-length works) reflecting a variety of cultural, historical, and philosophical perspectives will be read, discussed, and analyzed. The course includes inductive and deductive reasoning, analysis of fallacious reasoning, and use of persuasive language. The minimum word requirement of 6,500 words will be divided among at least four formal essays, ranging from 1,000-3,000 words each, two of which will include primary and secondary research and MLA format. Several group and individual class presentations will be required.
