ENGED 320    Service Learning: Tutoring Elementary Students in Reading    3 Units

Prerequisite: ENGRD 110 with a grade of "C" or better; or placement through the assessment process.
General Education: AA/AS Area III(b); CSU Area E1
Enrollment Limitation: Students are required to show proof of TB clearance and complete a fingerprint clearance through the cooperating school district before they can attend the school site for field work.

Description: This class offers students an opportunity to learn and practice basic methods of tutoring elementary children in reading. Students will meet on campus the entire semester to be trained in tutoring reading. After the first 2-3 weeks of training, students will be assigned to a nearby public elementary school to tutor during school hours, or they may be placed in a before or after school program. At the tutoring site, they will have in-depth practice tutoring elementary children who are reading below grade level. The students will tutor a total of 54 hours. Students will continue to attend the lecture portion of the class throughout the semester in order to receive additional training. This course is one of the two required field experience courses for the CSUS Liberal Studies major, also known as the Teacher Preparation Program. Prior to beginning work in the schools, students may be required to be fingerprinted and must pass a TB test.

This is a component of the Teacher Preparation program. At the start of the third week of instruction, students will begin their TBA lab hours, tutoring reading to public elementary school students at any of the following schools and times. Students must complete 54 TBA lab hours, which amounts to approximately three hours and 10 minutes per week, at the sites shown below. Please check the web schedule for additional class information regarding the TBA hours and elementary school sites.


In Folsom: Theodore Judah and Empire Oaks elementary schools. Students may tutor at one of these schools on a MW or T/TH schedule from 8:25AM-10:05AM. A Friday morning schedule is an option for 1 student at Empire Oaks. . At Theodore Judah, a 1:40-2:37 daily option is available for one student.

In El Dorado County: Blue Oak, Indian Creek, Sierra, and Schnell elementary schools as well as the after school program at Foothill Indian Education Alliance or at the Boys and Girls club. Time options at some of the schools include a T/TH schedule at 9:15am-10:05am or MW 9:00am-11:00am. A Friday morning schedule may be available at one school for 1 student. After school hours at the Boys and Girls Club or Foothill Indian Education include MW at arranged times between the hours of 3:00pm-5:30pm or T/TH from 3-5:00 pm.


Students must plan their schedules to have some of the above times open. Students must complete 45 hours of tutoring to complete the course. With permission of the instructor, students may tutor at other public elementary or middle schools in the Folsom area or in El Dorado County within the time frames listed above. Students will be responsible for participating in communications regarding the tutoring arrangements with the school and teachers, subject to approval of the college instructor.
