ESL 90    Language Skills Laboratory    .5-1 Units

Prerequisite: None.
Hours: 54 hours LAB
Description: This is a laboratory course designed to enable students to focus on specific English language skills through interaction with tutors, faculty, and computer software programs. This class is recommended for ESL students at any level who need further, focused attention to very specific skills including, but not limited to pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary development and spelling. Students may enter the course at any time during the first 9 weeks of the semester and earn either 0.5 or 1 unit. For each semester of enrollment, a specific study place will be developed by faculty in consultation with the students. This course may be taken a maximum of four times for credit, for a maximum of 4 units. This course is graded on a pass/no pass basis.

This half unit (0.5) class is offered in FLC Reading and Writing Center, located on the 2nd floor of FL2, room 239 at the main campus. The center is open Monday, Thursday, and Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm; and Tuesday and Wednesday 9:30am to 7:00pm during Spring 2013. Phone Number: 916-608-6517. Students must attend a mandatory orientation on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 2:30 pm. Students who do not begin work in the Reading and Writing Center during the first four weeks of class will be dropped. This class has 1.6 hours of TBA per week, to be completed in the Reading and Writing Center.


ESL 91    Beginning Independent Lab    .5-1 Units

Prerequisite: None.
Hours: 54 hours LAB
Description: This course provides individualized, self-paced, and/or small group instruction to non-native English speakers at the beginning levels. A variety of self-study materials are available on such topics as grammar, composition, reading, vocabulary, listening, pronunciation, study skills, and workplace skills to develop and reinforce the use of the English language. Students may register until the end of the ninth week of the semester if space allows. This course is pass/no pass and is not a substitute for other ESL courses. Students must complete 27 hours of work to earn 0.5 units of credit. Students may earn up to one unit per semester. This course may be taken a maximum of four times for credit, for a maximum of 4 units.

Students enrolled in ESL 91/92 may complete their lab requirements in the RCC Computer Lab anytime during open lab hours on Monday to Friday. Students can sign up for one-half or one full credit. Students must attend one of the following mandatory orientations located in the Computer Lab at the Rancho Cordova Center (RCC 7). Orientation dates: Tuesdays, January 22 & 29, 2013 at 9:00am, 10:40am, 1:00pm, and, 3:10pm; and Mondays, January 28 & February 4, 2013 at 9:00am, 10:40am, 1:00pm, and, 3:10pm. Students who enroll for a half unit will have 1.6 hours TBA per week, and students who enroll for one unit will have 3.2 hours TBA per week. All TBA work must be completed in the RCC Computer Lab.
