ENGED 320    Service Learning: Tutoring Elementary Students in Reading    3 Units

Prerequisite: ENGRD 110 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent skills demonstrated through the assessment process.

Description: This class offers students an opportunity to learn and practice basic methods of tutoring elementary children in reading. Students will meet on campus for the first part of the semester to be trained, and then will be assigned to a nearby elementary school where they will have in-depth practice at tutoring elementary children. This course, which provides an early field experience for students interested in elementary education, may be taken once for credit. Prior to beginning work in the schools, students may be required to be fingerprinted and pass a TB test.

Class meetings on January 18, January 23, January 25, January 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and May 15 are on the CRC campus in room P131A. Students who miss the first class session will be dropped; the first four class sessions are mandatory as they prepare students tutor. Any student wishing to enroll in ENGED 320 after January 18, 2017 must contact the professor before showing up to class or at the tutoring location. Class size will be limited due to restrictions at the school where tutoring will take place. Starting Wednesday, February 1 through May 10 students will meet at the tutoring location: Barbara Comstock Elementary School, 7000 Cranleigh Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95823. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the elementary school. All students must be available every Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for lecture and lab between the dates of February 1 and May 10, 2017. Any absence from the tutoring location can result in the student being dropped immediately form the course; BCM teachers and students deserve tutors who are responsible and serious about tutoring. Finally, this is not a course for CRC students to learn English; it is expected that all students will be able to tutor English and are familiar with speaking, reading, and writing in English. The final exam for the course will be Monday, May 15, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the CRC campus.
