HORT 300    Introduction to Horticulture    3 Units

Description: Introduction to Horticulture is a general, entry level course into environmental horticulture with an emphasis on basic plant science, plant use and care, and the landscape and nursery industries. Topics include basic botany, cultural practices, propagation, structures and layout, pest management, planting, container gardening, plant identification, turfgrass installation and care, and a survey of career opportunities.

HORT 305    Plant Identification-Fall Selections    3 Units

Description: This course is the identification and study of the growth habits, cultural practices, and ornamental uses of landscape and indoor plants adapted to climates of California. Plants emphasized will come from the current California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers (CANGC) and California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) certification exams plant lists. The focus will be on those plants best observed and studied during California‚s fall and/or winter seasons. (C-ID AG - EH 112L)

Students must attend 16.80 hours of Saturday lab activities scheduled around hands-on practical application. Three meetings tentatively scheduled for Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. on October 6, November 3, and December 8. Saturday lab dates will be finalized at the second class meeting. Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of each lab. Information will be available at the first class meeting.


HORT 320    Sustainable Landscape Construction    3 Units

Prerequisite: None
Advisory: HORT 300
Course Transferable to CSU, Green Course Green Course
Hours: 36 hours LEC ; 54 hours LAB
Description: This course covers the fundamentals of landscape construction, including soil preparation, paving and construction materials, hand and power tool use, turf and plant installation, plan reading, estimating, and bid preparation. It will emphasize approved traditional industry construction methods, as well as sustainable alternative and techniques. Local codes and state requirements will also be covered. This course is an initial step in preparation for the California State C-27 Landscape Contractor License exam.

HORT 350    Landscape Irrigation    3 Units

Prerequisite: HORT 300 with a grade of "C" or better

Description: This course prepares students to design, install and maintain a water efficient landscape irrigation system. Topics include water supply, basic hydraulics, component identification and terminology, system layout, pipe sizing, water application head types, valves, and controllers. Field trips may be required.

Students will achieve QWEL (Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper) Certification with a passing score on the final exam. The minimum passing score for QWEL Certification will be announced at the time of the final exam. Students must attend 16.80 hours of Saturday lab activities scheduled around hands-on practical application. Three meeting are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, 9:00 am - 2:30 pm on October 13, November 17, and December 15. The Saturday lab dates will be finalized at the second class meeting. Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of each lab. More Information will be available at the first class meeting.


HORT 498    Work Experience in Horticulture    1-4 Units

Prerequisite: None.
General Education: AA/AS Area III(b)
Enrollment Limitation: Students must be in a paid or unpaid internship, volunteer position or job related to career goals in Horticulture.
Course Transferable to CSU
Hours: 300 hours LAB
Description: This course provides students with opportunities to develop marketable skills in preparation for employment in their major field of study or advancement within their career. It is designed for students interested in work experience and/or internships in transfer level degree occupational programs. Course content includes understanding the application of education to the workforce; completion of required forms which document the student's progress and hours spent at the work site; and developing workplace skills and competencies. Appropriate level learning objectives are established by the student and the employer. During the semester, the student is required to participate in a weekly orientation and 75 hours of related paid work experience, or 60 hours of unpaid work experience for one unit. An additional 75 or 60 hours of related work experience is required for each additional unit. Work Experience may be taken for a total of 16 units when there are new or expanded learning objectives. Only one Work Experience course may be taken per semester.
