HCD 114    Human Potential Seminar    2 Units

Description: This course provides an in-depth examination of techniques to be used in enhancing one's chances for success in college. It is designed to meet the needs of students who are experiencing difficulty in achieving their goals in higher education. Course topics include: motivation, goal setting, communication skills, time management, exam preparation, note taking and reading college textbooks. It is required for most dismissed students for readmission to the college.

Description: This course covers the skills and knowledge necessary for college success. Topics include motivation, self discipline, learning styles, memory development, time management, communication skills, goal-setting, career planning, study skills and techniques, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, it covers personal issues that are commonly encountered by many college students. Campus resources, college regulations, and information competency are also addressed. This course is highly recommended for first time college students and/or continuing college students who would benefit. Field trips may be required.

Topics include an overview of American higher education, transfer admissions requirements, college research, major selection, transfer resources, student support services, transitional issues, the college application process, and preparation for graduate and professional education. Learning Community -- Puente Project - 5 units - Class Registration Number INDIS 1000 19854 This section of HCD 318 is taught in combination with ENGWR 300 (MW 9:00-10:20 AM). The mission of the Puente Project is designed to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who transfer to four-year Colleges and universities. Puente builds a community of motivated college students by providing English instruction in a supportive environment. The English composition course features Mexican American/ Latino literature; the Human Career Development class helps each student plan their class schedules and navigate the university application process. See course descriptions for ENGWR 300 and HCD 318. One unit of the Reading Center and one unit of the Writing Center will be required. Description: This course is a comprehensive approach to life and career planning based on extensive measurement of aptitude, interests, personality type, values, and skills. Learning Communities - First Year Experience (FYE) - 13 units - Registration Number: INDIS 1000, 19868
See INDIS 1000 for more complete information. This section of HCD 330 is taught in combination with ENGWR 300 (MW 12:00PM-1:20PM), LIBR 318 (2nd 8-week, Online & Th 2:00PM-2:50PM), ANTH 310 (TTh 3:00PM-4:15PM), and MATH 100 (M-Th 10:30AM-11:40AM)
The First Year Experience Program (FYE) is a structured academic program designed to increase the likelihood of college success. This experience is the second semester of a two-semester program (1-year cohort). The FYE objective is to promote learning in a supportive environment. All of the classes in the course - ENGWR 300, HCD 330, LIBR 318, ANTH 310 and Math 100 are linked through instructors, assignments and lectures. All courses numbered 300 and above are transfer level courses. Sign up using the one class number listed for the Learning Community; you will receive credit and a grade for each individual course listed in the Learning Community. Students interested in enrolling in the second semester of the FYE Learning Community are required to complete the first semester of the program and attend an orientation with a counselor. Enrollment Limitation: Course requires a mandatory orientation to determine appropriateness of assessment for learning disabilities.

Description: This course is designed for the student with special learning difficulties who may have a specific learning disability. This course includes a series of individual assessments of learning strengths and weaknesses to determine eligibility for Learning Disabilities services using criteria mandated by the California Community College Learning Disabilities Eligibility and Services Model (LDESM). Pass/No Pass only.
