Description: This course is a review of opportunities and resources relevant to student success at American River College. It will focus on goals and objectives, campus requirements, and skills, techniques, and attitudes compatible with student progress. HCD 114    Human Potential Seminar    2 Units

Prerequisite: None.

Description: This course provides an in-depth examination of techniques to be used in enhancing one's chances for success in college. It is designed to meet the needs of students who are experiencing difficulty in achieving their goals in higher education. Course topics include: motivation, goal setting, communication skills, time management, exam preparation, note taking and reading college textbooks. It is required for most dismissed students for readmission to the college.

Description: This course covers the skills and knowledge necessary for college success. Topics include motivation, self discipline, learning styles, memory development, time management, communication skills, goal-setting, career planning, study skills and techniques, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, it covers personal issues that are commonly encountered by many college students. Campus resources, college regulations, and information competency are also addressed. This course is highly recommended for first time college students and/or continuing college students who would benefit. Field trips may be required.

Learning Communities - Umoja-Sakhu - 9 units - Class Registration Number: 18298
The Umoja-Sakhu Learning Community is designed to enhance the cultural and educational experiences of community college students, particularly those who identify themselves as African American. Course content is presented with an African American emphasis. The nine unit learning community consists of ENGRD 116 (Proficient Reading) taught (MW 10:30 - 11:50AM), ENGWR 102 (Proficient Writing) taught (MW 12:00 - 1:20PM) and HCD 310 (College Success) taught (MW 3:30 4:50PM). Sign up using the one class number listed for the Learning Community; you will receive credit and a grade for each individual course listed in the Learning Community. Learning Community -- Puente Project - 5 units - Class Registration Number 12704 This class (HCD 318) is taught in combination with ENGWR 300 (MW 1:30PM-2:50PM). The mission of the Puente Project is designed to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who transfer to four-year Colleges and universities. Puente builds a community of motivated college students by providing English instruction in a supportive environment. The English composition course features Mexican American/ Latino literature; the Human Career Development class helps each student plan their class schedules and navigate the university application process. See course descriptions for ENGWR 300 and HCD 318. One unit of the Reading Center and one unit of the Writing Center will be required.
