Description: This course focuses on basic writing skills, emphasizing the connection between writing and reading. It includes writing in response to short reading selections. In addition, the writing process and development of specific skills within the sentence, paragraph, and essay forms are covered in preparation for ENGWR 102 or ENGWR 103. A minimum of 3000 words of full-process writing is required.

Natomas Writing Center/Writing Across the Curriculum
The following class meets in the Learning Resource Center at the Natomas Center which is open Monday through Thursday 11:30am-7:00pm. It extends the services of the Writing Center to students needing assistance with writing assignments for all classes. Services include individual appointments and small group workshops. Students must enroll in ENGWR 53 at the Center to be able to get help at the Natomas Writing Center/WAC. Students should attend class the first day to sign up for an orientation. Group orientations will be scheduled frequently during the first three weeks of the semester and by special arrangement thereafter. For more information, visit the LRC or the English Area office.

ENGWR 56    Integrated Reading, Writing and Study Skills    6 Units

Same As: ENGRD 56
Prerequisite: None.
Hours: 108 hours LEC
Description: This course emphasizes the interrelationships among reading, writing, and study skills at the basic skills level. Course content, activities, and assignments integrate all three areas, providing opportunities to improve reading and writing skills in a student-centered environment. The course includes reading and writing in response to a variety of fictional and non-fictional materials and reviews basic rules of grammar and usage to develop skills in sentence, paragraph, and essay writing. Additional topics include a review of campus services and programs and effective study strategies. This course requires a total of 3,500 words written throughout the semester in a variety of assignments. Individual work in the Learning Resource Center may be required. Completing this course is equivalent to completing both ENGWR 51 and ENGRD 15. This course is not open to students who have completed ENGRD 56.

Description: This course emphasizes writing and includes reading, research, and critical thinking skills essential for successful completion of a college degree. Writing assignments include expository and argumentative essays (6,500 words minimum for course) using MLA documentation and format. Reading assignments include a variety of transfer-level texts of substantial length.

Learning Community -- Puente Project - 5 units - Class Registration Number 25421 This class (ENGWR 300) is taught in combination with HCD 318 (MW 12:30PM-1:20PM). The mission of the Puente Project is designed to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who transfer to four-year Colleges and universities. Puente builds a community of motivated college students by providing English instruction in a supportive environment. The English composition course features Mexican American/ Latino literature; the Human Career Development class helps each student plan their class schedules and navigate the university application process. See course descriptions for ENGWR 300 and HCD 318. One unit of the Reading Center and one unit of the Writing Center will be required. Sign up using the one class number listed for the Learning Community; you will receive credit and a grade for each individual course listed in the Learning Community.

Description: 1) This course offers further study and practice in analytical reading and writing. 2) It covers principles of logic such as reasoning inductively and deductively, recognizing logical fallacies, and suspending judgments. 3) Assigned readings include novels, short stories, poems, plays, biographies, and literary criticism. Essays written for the course (6,500 words minimum) generalize from the texts to present carefully reasoned arguments. At least one essay will include citations from secondary sources, documented according to current MLA format. Attendance at a live theatre production may be required. One or more additional hours per week in the Learning Resource Center or Writing Across the Curriculum or Reading Across the Disciplines programs may be required.
