Description: This course is designed to teach about options and resources relevant to student success at American River College. The focus is on academic and personal goal setting, campus resources, academic requirements, basic study skill development and strategies that are compatible with academic success.

Learning Communities: Puente Project - Proficient Writing (ENGWR 102) and College Discovery Program (HCD 111) - 4 Units - Registration Number: INDIS 1000, 19939The mission of the Puente Project is to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who transfer to four-year Colleges and universities. Puente builds a community of motivated college students by providing English writing instruction in a supportive environment. The English composition course features Mexican American/Latino literature; the Human Career Development class helps each student plan their class schedules and navigate the university application process. See course descriptions for ENGWR 102 and HCD 111. HCD 114    Human Potential Seminar    2 Units

Prerequisite: None.

Description: This course provides an in-depth examination of techniques to be used in enhancing one's chances for success in college. It is designed to meet the needs of students who are experiencing difficulty in achieving their goals in higher education. Course topics include: motivation, goal setting, communication skills, time management, exam preparation, note taking and reading college textbooks. It is required for most dismissed students for readmission to the college.

Description: This course covers the skills and knowledge necessary for college success. Topics include motivation, self discipline, learning styles, memory development, time management, communication skills, goal-setting, career planning, study skills and techniques, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, it covers personal issues that are commonly encountered by many college students. Campus resources, college regulations, and information competency are also addressed. This course is highly recommended for first time college students and/or continuing college students who would benefit. Field trips may be required.

This section of HCD 310 is taught in combination with ENGWR 102 (MW 10:30AM-11:50AM) and ENGRD 116 (MW 12:00PM-1:20PM). Umoja (a Kiswahili word meaning "unity") is designed to enhance the cultural and educational experiences of community college students, particularly those who identify themselves as African American. Students will be required to sign up for the Reading Center and Writing Center concurrently. The First Year Experience Program is a structured academic program designed to increase the likelihood of college success. The FYE objective is to promote learning in a supportive environment. This offering is the first semester of a two-semester program. Enrollment Limitation: Course requires a mandatory orientation to determine appropriateness of assessment for learning disabilities.

Description: This course is designed for the student with special learning difficulties who may have a specific learning disability. This course includes a series of individual assessments of learning strengths and weaknesses to determine eligibility for Learning Disabilities services using criteria mandated by the California Community College Learning Disabilities Eligibility and Services Model (LDESM). Pass/No Pass only.
