INDIS 321    Introduction to Group Tutoring    1 Unit

Prerequisite: None
Advisory: A grade of "B" or better in course to be tutored. Faculty recommendation to be a Beacon Learning Assistant or Learning Resource Center group tutor.

Hours: 9 hours LEC ; 27 hours LAB
Description: This course is offered in coordination with the Beacon Peer-Assisted Learning Program and the Tutorial Services Program. It is designed to familiarize the Learning Assistant with the role of the tutor and the methods of effective group tutoring. This course emphasizes collaborative, interactive approaches to learning in a group setting.

Learning Community -- "Puente Project "
The mission of the Puente Project is to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who transfer to four-year Colleges and universities. Puente builds a community of motivated college students by providing English writing instruction in a supportive environment. The English composition course features Mexican American/Latino literature; the Human Career Development class helps each student plan their class schedules and navigate the university application process. Description: Umoja (a Kiswahili word meaning "unity") is designed to enhance the cultural and educational experiences of community college students, particularly those who identify themselves as African American. Learning Communities: One Semester, Two Levels: A Faster Way to Complete College Composition - ENGWR 300 and ENGWR 102 - 6 units
This learning community offers the opportunity to complete both ENGWR 102 and ENGWR 300 in one semester. Because of the intensive nature of this course, it is best for students who are highly motivated and scored at the higher end of the cut off for ENGWR 102. Sign up using the one class number listed for the Learning Community (29632); you will receive credit and a grade for each individual course listed in the Learning Community. Note: Students will also be required to enroll in .5 units of ENGWR 96 or ENGWR 306 (Writing Across the Curriculum).
