HCD 111    College Discovery Program    1 Unit

Description: This course is a review of opportunities and resources relevant to student success at American River College. It will focus on goals and objectives, campus requirements, and skills, techniques, and attitudes compatible with student progress. Examination of student services, instructional area, and campus life. May be taken twice for credit.

Learning Communities: Puente Project - Proficient Writing (ENGWR 102) and College Discovery Program (HCD 111) - 4 Units
Learning Community -- "Puente Project "
The mission of the Puente Project is to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who transfer to four-year Colleges and universities. Puente builds a community of motivated college students by providing English writing instruction in a supportive environment. The English composition course features Mexican American/Latino literature; the Human Career Development class helps each student plan their class schedules and navigate the university application process. See course descriptions for ENGWR 102 and HCD 111. Sign up using the one class number listed for the Learning Community (29344 ); you will be enrolled in both classes and will receive credit and a grade for each individual course listed in the Learning Community.



HCD 114    Human Potential Seminar    2 Units

Prerequisite: None.
Hours: 36 hours LEC
Description: This course provides an in-depth examination of techniques to be used in enhancing one's chances for success in college. It is designed to meet the needs of students who are experiencing difficulty in achieving their goals in higher education. Course topics include: motivation, goal setting, communication skills, time management, exam preparation, note taking and reading college textbooks. It is required for most dismissed students for readmission to the college.

Description: This course covers the skills and knowledge necessary for college success. Topics include motivation, self discipline, learning styles, memory development, time management, communication skills, goal-setting, career planning, study skills and techniques, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, it covers personal issues that are commonly encountered by many college students. Campus resources, college regulations, and information competency are also addressed. This course is highly recommended for first time college students and/or continuing college students who would benefit. Field trips may be required.

Learning Communities - Umoja-Sakhu - 9 units - Class Registration Number: INDIS 1000, 29349
This section of HCD 310 is taught in combination with ENGWR 102 (MW 10:30AM-11:50AM) and ENGRD 116 (MW 12:00PM-1:20PM). Umoja (a Kiswahili word meaning "unity") is designed to enhance the cultural and educational experiences of community college students, particularly those who identify themselves as African American. Students will be required to sign up for the Reading Center and Writing Center concurrently. Description: This course is designed for the student with special learning difficulties who may have a specific learning disability. Individual assessment of learning strengths and weaknesses will be completed to determine eligibility for Learning Disabilities services using criteria mandated by the California community college system. Offered on a credit/no credit basis only.
